Memorial Service for Thomas J. Hixon

A Celebration of Life in memory of Thomas J. Hixon will be held on Sunday, April 19, 2009, 11:00 AM at the Westward Look Resort, 245 E. Ina Rd., Tucson, AZ 85704.

Dr. Hixon passed away on March 21, 2009. Dr. Hixon had a long and distinguished career as a Scientist, Research Director, and Teacher in the department of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences and as an Administrator of this university. He is survived by his wife Jeannette Hoit, son Todd and daughter Kimberly.  read more »

The History of Red/Brown Journalism Exhibit

The newest exhibit in the Main Library's Research West area, The History of Red/Brown Journalism and Communications, showcases ancient to contemporary media with special emphasis on the work of women writers, editors and publishers from the late 1800s, early 1900s and the 1960s and 1970s. The free exhibit, created by the students in Prof. Roberto Rodriguez's History of Red/Brown Journalism and Communications class, runs from April 7 through May 7 and coincides with the Voices for Justice Project, which is celebrating 200 years of Latino/Latina journalism.  read more »

Young Women's Empowerment Academy 2009

The Commission on the Status of Women at the University of Arizona is hosting their 3rd annual Young Women’s Empowerment Academy on April 18th to be held at Bear Down Gym on the University Campus. This year’s theme is “Healthy Selves, Healthy Communities”. This event is open to young women age 12-16 years old and has an optional parent/caregiver component. Admission is free. In association with the 2009 V-Day Worldwide Campaign, El Comite del Día-V of Tucson is proud to announce a landmark benefit bilingual performance of The Vagina Monologues, "Los Monologos de la Vagina," for the first time in Tucson.

V-Day, or Día-V, is a global movement working toward an end to violence against women. Originally an outgrowth of The Vagina Monologues, the V-Day movement promotes creative events that increase awareness, raise money, and revitalize the spirit of existing anti-violence organizations.  read more »

Earth Day Block Party: UA Initiatives

University of Arizona students, in collaboration with the City of Tucson and Pima County, are planning an Earth Day event that will include the National Conversation on Climate Action and a street fair style block party. We are excited to announce that block party will be entirely student planned and student run, but will be an event to be enjoyed by both the Tucson and UA community. UA South Faculty Holding Lecture on Positive Psychology

UA South will be hosting a lecture with Laura Gail Lunsford, who previously worked with gifted and talented teenagers.

Lunsford, an assistant professor of psychology at UA South, will present her talk, "Thriving Versus Surviving: What the Science of Positive Psychology Suggests for Individuals and Organizations," at UA South in Sierra Vista on April 1.

Her talk will also be broadcast via Interactive Television to the UA Science and Technology Park in Tucson, the UA South campus in Douglas and the UA Santa Cruz site in Nogales.  read more »

The UA Foundation Grants and Awards Committee is accepting proposals for its independent grants program. The deadline for submittals is April 10. 

Grant requests should be nontechnical in nature and broadly serve the mission of The University of Arizona.  These proposals may be generated from faculty, appointed personnel, staff or students, and are independent from any sort of larger, campus-wide grant application process.   read more »
