It is with pleasure that I launch the call for nominations of candidates for 2009 Regents’ Professors. The designation of Regents’ Professor is the highest of faculty ranks and is reserved for full professors with exceptional achievements that have brought them national or international recognition. Regents’ Professors are expected to exemplify the highest objectives and standards of the University through their scholarship, research or creative activities, and teaching. These appointments, approved by the Arizona Board of Regents, are limited to three percent of the tenured and tenure-track faculty and carry a modest salary increment.  read more »

Change in PTS Lobby Hours

Effective Monday, June 1, 2009, Parking & Transportation Services (PTS) will be implementing a pilot program to test new Customer Relations lobby hours. The new hours of service will include:

  • Lobby Hours: 8am to 4 pm Mon, Tues, Wed, Fri; 9 am to 4 pm Thursday.
  • Access to the PTS web site for information during the day and night at: www.parking.arizona.edu.

Modeling Epidemics and Pandemics

As we in Pima County wonder who next will be struck with H1N1, we may also wonder how scientists try to understand the spread of the virus. Because so much is at stake, it is very important that mathematical and computer models built to mimic this spread are as accurate as possible. Adjunct Instructor of Creative Writing Wins Prestigious National Literary Award

Ben Quick, Adjunct Instructor of Creative Writing at the University of Arizona South, has won an exclusive Pushcart Prize for "The Boneyard," an essay featured in the March/April 2008 issue of Orion Magazine. Before joining the U of A South faculty, Quick served as Beverly Rodgers Fellow in creative nonfiction on his way to an MFA in writing from the University of Arizona. He lives in Tucson with his son, Sage. In addition to his work with students at the U of A South, Quick teaches writing on the U of A main campus, and is hard at work on a memoir that chronicles his solo journey through history and loss in Vietnam. "The Boneyard" will appear along with the other 2009 Pushcart Prize winners in the forthcoming 2010 Pushcart Prize Anthology.  read more »

Angels & Demons: The Science of Antimatter and the Large Hadron Collider

In the upcoming movie "Angels & Demons," a story from the author of "The Da Vinci Code," some bad guys steal antimatter from CERN (a laboratory on the Swiss/French border) and use it to make a bomb to destroy the Vatican. If you've ever wondered what antimatter is, and if one can really make a bomb from it, or what really goes on at places like CERN, come to this lecture – where all will be revealed. UA professor of physics Erich Varnes will give the talk Wednesday, May 13 at 8 p.m. in Rm. 150 of the Harvill Building. The event is free and open to the public.  read more »

ASUA is hosting the “Last Smash Platinum Bash” concert in Arizona Stadium this Wednesday, April 29. For security and concert operational requirements, Lot 6090 and Lot 6092 will be closed to parking on April 29th beginning at 7:00am. The east row of Lot 6091, adjacent to the stadium, will also be reserved for the concert.

Lot Specific 6090/6091 and 6092 permit holders will be able to park in Lot 6091, South of Apache/Santa Cruz Hall in non-reserved spaces on this day.  read more »

UA Women’s Plaza of Honor Kiosk Unveiling and Celebration

Writer/historians Bonnie Henry and Patricia Preciado-Martin will join University President Shelton on April 27 at 5 p.m. at the Women’s Plaza of Honor to unveil the newly installed Kiosk, an interactive, on-site computer for sharing the life stories of Plaza honorees. The late-afternoon celebration marks the end of Phase One of the Plaza campaign’s efforts to honor women and raise funds for a graduate fellowship in Women’s Studies.  read more »
