Cancer Research Funds Available

Qualified faculty from all UA colleges are encouraged to apply for cancer research funds made available through an American Cancer Society Institutional Research Grant (ACS-IRG) and the Arizona Cancer Center Support Grant (AZCCSG).

Only applications that relate to cancer research will be accepted. However, cancer-related research will be interpreted using the broadest definition.

In addition to funding for basic and clinical research projects we now have funds available for Special Interest Awards. These focus on areas of investigation that include psychosocial and behavioral research, health policy and studies of cancer in the poor and underserved. Tenure-track or research faculty at the assistant professor level who have not had independent federal or American Cancer Society funding in the past are eligible to apply and applicants must be within 8 years of their first independent research or faculty appointment. Also, investigators that received ACS-IRG funding in previous years can apply for continuation of their projects providing they are still eligible. Competitive renewals must include a completed progress report and a letter that indicates the applicant has attended the New Investigator’s workshop sponsored by the office of the COM’s vice president for research. The funds are intended to provide seed money to obtain preliminary data in support of more extensive proposals. Budget requests may not exceed $30,000 in direct costs.

Note: Due to differing funding sources there will be two start dates for awards, January 1 and July 1, 2009. However, all applications are due on the same date, will be evaluated at the same time and will be funded for a one year period.
