Parking & Transportation Services is pleased to announce that the Olive Tunnel is open to bicyclists once again. In addition to the underpass providing easy access to pedestrians, the Olive Tunnel will again allow bicycle traffic under Speedway. The Olive Tunnel is adjacent to the Park Avenue Garage and McClelland Hall on the north side of Speedway, and the Museum of Art and Architecture Building to the south of Speedway.
Re-opening the Olive Tunnel for bicycle riding will create a safe venue for the campus community and public who utilize a bicycle to access campus, with a safe alternative to riding with vehicular traffic and crossing Speedway Boulevard to access UA campus facilities/buildings. It will reduce the risk of potential bike and automobile accidents along Park Avenue and Speedway Boulevard. Bicycle Safety Officers will be on duty at the Olive Tunnel to educate the public on the new access for Cyclists. A safe bike and pedestrian route through the Olive Tunnel will compliment accessibility to the upcoming Modern Street Car that will be utilizing Second Street on a regular basis.
"This exciting project has taken a couple of years to put together, but it is being painted and the signs are being posted right now," said David Heineking, Director, Parking & Transportation Services. "I hope that a lot of people will safely take advantage of this to ride their bikes to and from campus. This will help our campus traffic by diverting some of the bike traffic from Mountain Avenue."
The placement of new directional and speed enforcement signs, as well as striping will assist in directing cyclists and pedestrians through the Olive Tunnel.
